3 Superfood Latte Recipes We Can’t Get Enough Of

Hi guys my name is Carli Rubi and I am one of the trainers here at x2o studio! I am so excited to be writing for this blog and share with you my passion for nutrition and wellness. I am a nutritional science major at San Jose State University and am so excited to pursue a career as a Registered Dietitian.

With the current state of the pandemic we all could use a boost of immunity, that’s why I decided to sit down and create three Superfood latte’s for you all!

What are Superfoods?

Superfoods are foods that are extremely nutrient dense and help your body regulate its immune system, digestive system, and cardiovascular system. These are just a few facts about all the properties of superfoods and the list for foods that are “super” is so extensive.

Four foods I've highlighted for today’s recipes are turmeric, cacao, maca, and pumpkin

Turmeric

Turmeric is a root found in the ginger family and its immune boosting properties are incredible. It is an anti-inflammatory spice. Many people get confused over what inflammation or “anti-inflammatory” means. In short, it's our body's army. When foreign invaders such as toxins, cancer cells, or pathogens enter the body, our body’s inflammatory system helps to block them from entering our system. People who battle with arthritis, heart disease, or cancer often get placed on an anti-inflammatory diet to help keep their body healthy and functioning properly.

Cacao

No, not coco, but so similar and even better for you. Cacao is one of the best superfoods out there, its rich amount of antioxidants make this exactly what your immune system needs. Along with antioxidants it also contains high amounts of calcium. I can eat chocolate to get calcium? YES! It doesn’t get any better than that.

Maca

Let’s talk maca. Maca is a root that is slowly becoming more known in the health industry. It’s main job-- balancing hormones. Maca is amazing for those battling with infertility and not just in women but men too! It is a super versatile powder and can be used in drinks, smoothies, or even on top of salads. Hormone balance is such a challenge for many and it is something that starts in our gut, in our digestive system.

Pumpkin

Pumpkin is high in lutein and zeaxanthin, substances that may help prevent the formation of cataracts and reduce the risk of macular degeneration.

We truly are what we eat and I am so excited to use this blog to help us all become the best version of ourselves through FOOD!

Note: each recipe is measured per one serving.

Recipe 1: Golden Milk Latte

Recipe 1: Golden Milk Latte

Recipe 1: Golden Milk Latte

This latte has become so popular over the years and it is so yummy and creamy. For this recipe all you need to do is bring your milk to a simmer and add in your spices one by one. SO SIMPLE. For those of you that like it sweet feel free to add more coconut sugar or your favorite low glycemic sweetener (maple syrup, honey, etc.)

What you’ll need:

  • 2 Cups full fat oat milk (Full fat is essential… makes it SO creamy).

  • 1 ½ TSP Ground Turmeric (Fresh turmeric root is even better but most of you will probably have ground laying around your house)

  • Sprinkle of ground black pepper. This is to allow the turmeric to absorb into your system faster.

  • ¼ TSP ground cinnamon (or one full cinnamon stick)

  • ¼ TSP ground ginger (for extra digestion help)

  • ½ TSP vanilla extract

  • 1 TSP coconut sugar

  • Sprinkle of nutmeg and cinnamon for garnish.

Recipe 2: Pumpkin Chai Latte

Recipe 2: Pumpkin Chai Latte

Recipe 2: Pumpkin Chai Latte

This recipe screams fall! My favorite season. Note that if you are unable to find canned pumpkin puree, roasting a pumpkin and scooping out the “flesh” will work just as great. Super simple recipe as well, just place all items into a pot. Bring to a simmer and enjoy!

What you’ll need:

2 Cups full fat oat milk

2 Chai tea bags (or 1 TBSP of loose chai tea leaves). Follow steeping instructions on your tea box.

4 TBSP Pumpkin puree

1TSP coconut sugar

1 TSP vanilla extract

Sprinkle of Pumpkin Pie spice for garnish.

Recipe 3: Maca and Cacao “Hot Chocolate”

Recipe 3: Maca and Cacao “Hot Chocolate”

Recipe 3: Maca and Cacao “Hot Chocolate”

Hot chocolate that’s good for you? Yes please.

This recipe is so good and carries the perfect balance of sweetness. I wanted to try the brand CACOCO, which is a drinking chocolate. I've heard such great things and the ingredients are super clean. It’s available at whole foods however it is a bit pricey. If you do not want to spend the money you can use cacao powder.

The ingredients in this drinking chocolate already contain coconut sugar and spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and himalayan pink salt, so, if you choose to just use plain cacao powder, be sure to add in the spices and sweetener to taste.

This recipe is the easiest of the three if you are using CACOCO drinking chocolate. Place your milk in a pot to simmer on the stove. Simply add the CACOCO powder to your milk, whisk until melted. Then, add in the maca powder and whisk till completely dissolved. Enjoy!

What you’ll need:

2 Cups full fat oat milk

3 TBSP CACOCO Drinking Chocolate 60% rich dark (https://www.coracaoconfections.com/products/cacoco-60-rich-dark-7-05-oz-200g)

1 TBSP Gelatinized Maca powder (for easier digestion) (https://www.amazon.com/Navitas-Organics-Maca-Gelatinized-Powder/dp/B004KPMKWC)

Carli Rubi

My fitness journey started at the early age of 4 when I was placed into my first dance class. I was hooked from the beginning and continued my dance career for 14 years. In those 14 years, I tried sports like volleyball and softball but my heart always chose dance. When I got to college I left my dance career and quickly realized I needed to fill the void. I tried personal trainers where I was able to experiment with weight training, HIIT training, and gained an overall boost of confidence in my strength. After a couple of years I realized that I missed a class/community feeling to my workouts. I began to experiment with pilates classes and even went on to work towards my reformer pilates certification. Before teaching at x2o Studio, I taught at Lagree LG in Los Gatos. I am currently studying Nutrition and Dietetics at San Jose University with the hope to pursue a career as a Registered Dietitian. I love being able to fulfill a lifestyle in health and wellness through my studies and my career as a trainer.
